Did you know that April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month?

At Northwestern Towing, we’ve launched our “Eyes on the Road. Hands on the Wheel.” campaign—not just to fight distracted driving, but to highlight how inattention behind the wheel directly puts lives at risk. Let’s take a second to talk about what that really means.

You’ve seen it, maybe even done it:
A quick text at a red light. Scrolling a playlist. Grabbing lunch behind the wheel. But what happens when distraction turns deadly?

We see the aftermath every single day that distracted driving creates. The lives torn apart by the carelessness of distraction behind the wheel are immeasurable. Families lose loved ones. Children grow up without parents. First responders, tow operators, and everyday motorists face danger simply because someone looked down at a phone.

In Oregon, the “Move Over Law” (ORS 811.147) requires drivers to move over a lane or slow down when approaching vehicles with flashing lights—tow trucks, police, fire, EMS, or any vehicle with hazards on. If moving over isn’t possible, drivers must slow down by at least five mph below the posted speed limit.

Our operators are out there 24/7, inches from speeding traffic, trusting that drivers are paying attention and will do the right thing. But when you’re distracted… you don’t see the flashing lights. You don’t move over. You don’t slow down.

And someone pays the price.
